Sports Calendar: May 16-17
With commencements from high school scheduled for the weekend, there is no shortage of postseason sports action.
It's golf's turn for postseason action for this Friday.
The big meet will take place at the Red Oak Country Club as the Red Oak boys golf team hosts sectionals. It all kicks off at 10 a.m. Southwest Valley, Clarinda, East Union, SWI, St. Albert, Treynor and Tri-Center are all scheduled to compete at the meet.
There will also be a 2A sectional meet hosted by Kuemper Catholic in Carroll. Des Moines Christian hosted a sectional Wednesday at Jester Park.
Teams and individuals that advance from the sectionals will compete in the district meet at Lake Panorama Golf Course, next Friday.
Red Oak won't be the only one hosting a golf sectional meet. The Griswold boys golf meet will host it in 1A at the Griswold Golf and Country Club. This meet also starts at 10 a.m. Teams competing in the meet include East Mills, Lenox, Bedford, CAM, Nishnabotna, Nodaway Valley and Riverside.
THere will also be 1A sectional meets taking place in Lamoni, Coon Rapids and Dunlap (Boyer Valley).
Those who advance on, whether it be team or individual, will compete in the district meet at the Crestwood Hills Golf Course, hosted by CAM, next Friday.
Saturday
The only key event for Saturday will take place with girls tennis. Regional team tennis kicks off Saturday all around the state.
Both Red Oak and Southwest Valley will be facing off in the first round of Region 2 i n Class 1A. The meet takes place in Atlantic at 9 a.m. They will be playing in the first round in Atlantic along with the Trojanns and Harlan.
The winner of Red Oak-Southwest Valley and Atlantic-Harlan will face off just a couple hours later in the regional semifinals. As of now, the current start time is 1 p.m., but it could start sooner.
The winner of the two meets on Saturday will compete in the regional final next weekend in the regional final against Red Oak.
The rest of the Region 2 bracket features first round matches in Glenwood, Grinnell and Huxley. In Glenwood, it will be the Rams taking on Shenandoah, while St. Albert faces Clarinda.
In Grinnell, Pella takes on Boone and Saydel faces Grinnell. Finally, in Huxley, Creston takes on Ballard, while Clarke/Murray faces North Polk.
