Sports Calendar: May 22

It will be a busy day around the area for Thursday.

The big event will be taking place in Des Moines though as the state track meet kicks off at Drake Stadium. For area teams and competitors, it all starts at 9 a.m. with the 1A girls shuttle hurdle relay prelims. Stanton and Griswold will compete in the heats for the shuttle hurdles. 

Additionally, the 1A girls shot put, featuring Essex's Regan Burns also starts at 9 a.m.

The first Red Oak athlete competing will be Josh Sunberg as he gets the start in the 2A 3,200-meter field. That race is expected to start at 3:50 p.m.

The other Red Oak competitors, Kate Walker and Nikki Graber, compete later in the evening when they take part in the 2A 400-meter dash final. That race is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.

Griswold's Rebekah Topham starts her day around 9:40 a.m. when she and teammate Alyx Flippin go for the title in the 1A 3,000-meter race.

Other Griswold races and events include the 1A girls 4x800 (11:10 a.m.), the 1A boys 4x800 (noon) and the 1A boys shuttle hurdle prelims (2 p.m.).

Southwest Valley has two competitors scheduled to go for Thursday. Keegan Longabaugh will compete in the 2A shot put at 4:30 p.m. Sydney Maynes competes in the 2A 200-meter dash prelims at 6:20 p.m.

For East Mills, Travis Tupper has his two races taking place Thursday. The first will be the 1A 200-meter dash prelims, which starts at 1 p.m. The other will be at 1:40 p.m. as he takes part in the 1A 400-meter dash finals.

Elsewhere, girls regional tennis continues Thursday with the singles and doubles tournament.

Red Oak wil be hosting the Region 2 tournament, with tennis matches taking place at Red Oak High School, as well as at the outdoor courts by the YMCA. Atlantic, Clarinda, Southwest Valley, Harlan, Shenandoah, Glenwood and St. Albert are all expected to attend. The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m.

There will be other regional tournaments taking place in both 1A and 2A. In 1A, the sites include LeMars, Boone, Waverly-Shell Rock, Waterloo Columbus (hosting two regional sites), the University of Iowa tennis facility, Boone and Pella Christian.

The 2A sites include Fort Dodge, Ankeny Centennial, Urbandale, West Des Moines Valley, Waterloo West, Bettendorf, Clinton and Ottumwa.

The winners from the tournaments will advance on to the state singles and doubles tournament, which takes place June 5 and 6. Class 1A will take place in Iowa City, while 2A takes place in Ames.
