Sports Calendar: Red Oak hosts Glenwood for doubleheader; Stanton-Villisca square off in conference title game

There's some big games taking place Friday night around the area.

Both Red Oak basketball teams will be home once again as they host the Glenwood Rams. The action kicks off at 6 p.m. with the girls game. The boys game will take place shortly after the girls.

Both Red Oak teams are coming off big wins Tuesday night at home against Clarinda. For the girls, they have a two game win streak and look to win their third in a row. In the last encounter with Glenwood, the girls fell short in the fourth quarter, losing 49-47. They'll play a Glenwood team that is coming off of a win against Creston Tuesday night.

In the boys match-up, Red Oak will look to win its second straight game. They were able to pull away in the fourth quarter and get the win over Clarinda Tuesday night 57-49. The Tigers will play a Glenwood team that has lost two in a row and trying to avoid a third straight loss.

Elsewhere, the Corner Conference girls basketball tournament wraps up Friday night and it will feature both Stanton and Villisca in the championship game once again. This will be the third straight Corner Conference championship game between the two teams. Stanton has won the last two times. Could the third time be the charm for Villisca?

Villisca had to come from behind in the second half to tie the game against Nishnabotna and force it into overtime. The Blue Jays defeated Nishnabotna 47-43.

For Stanton, they had an easier time in the semifinals as they blew out the Fremont-Mills Knights 71-48, thanks in part to Ragen Anderson's six three-pointers in the win. Anderson finished with 20 points.

This will be the second meeting between Stanton and Villisca this season. Villisca won the first match-up Dec. 11 by a score of 56-38.

The championship game will start at 7:45 p.m. Nishnabotna and Fremont-Mills will face off in the consolation game at 6:15 p.m.

The boys Corner Conference championship will take place Saturday night in Tabor as Villisca faces Fremont-Mills. Villisca won Thursday night in the semifinals over East Mills 59-49.

East Mills will play Sidney in the consolation game. The consolation game will take place first at 6:15 p.m with the championship game to follow.

In other action, the Griswold basketball teams will be home Friday night when they host the Treynor Cardinals in a doubleheader. The action kicks off at 6 p.m. with the girls game.

The girls are looking to recover from their loss Tuesday night against Riverside, while the boys look to put a halt to their two game losing skid.

In wrestling, the John J. Harris Tournament will begin Friday and continue Saturday. The Red Oak wrestling team will be one of the teams competing at the tournament Friday and Saturday.
