Spring Concerts at the Wilson Performing Arts Center

Performing Arts and Education Association of Southwest Iowa is pleased to present two spring concerts in May. On Monday, May 18, Strings Unlimited will perform under the direction of Rebecca Kia, and on Thursday, May 21, students of Somers Guitar School, Guy Somers, instructor, will perform. Admission for each of the concerts is $5 . Tickets can be purchased in advance at the PAEA office or at the door.

The Strings Unlimited concert will feature a variety of selections. Music form the movies includes a John Williams Trilogy of “Star Wars,” the theme from “Jurassic Park,” “Raiders March,” and “Into the West” from “Lord of the Rings.”

A Bach duet will be performed by Sue Medberry and Kendi Buesing. Soyoun Jeon will play a Concerto in D for solo violin.

The Prelude Orchestra will play several numbers, including the folk songs, “Kookabura” and “Fioliralera.” “Aunt Rhodie’s Appetite, a traditional song, features Sue Medberry, Mary Sellers, Bevin Griffen, Jenny Goodell, and Heidi Vanderholm.

Ms. Kia has been the Strings Unlimited instructor for PAEA for five years. Kia is a full-time violinist with the Omaha Symphony, and this year, often performs as solo violinist for Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour. She is a Chicago native and has studied at Augustana College, the University of Iowa and the Mannes School of Music in New York. She combines over 20 years of teaching experience with nearly 20 years of professional and symphony performance.

The Somers Guitar School concert will feature children, teens and adults performing a variety of styles including contemporary Christian, rock, classical and Broadway music.

Younger students will perform in solo, duet and group format. Year two and three rock students will perform snippets of “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” songs. The evening will end with a complete rock band including drums, keyboard, guitar, bass and vocals. Students will be dressed as their favorite rockers featuring a jam session to “Riders on the Storm” by The Doors and the audience may prefer to dress for a relaxed, fun and enjoyable night with a little musical something for everyone.
