Stanton beats Essex, loses to Villisca
ESSEX— The Stanton Viqueens got back to winning ways Friday night by defeating the Essex Trojanettes 68-28 in Essex.
The win is Stanton’s second of the season and it snaps a three game losing streak.
Last Tuesday, Stanton lost their third straight game of the season, doing so to the Villisca Blue Jays, 46-43.
The difference in the game were free throws by Villisca’s Morganne Haer and Jill Vanderhoof.
“They hit their free throws down the stretch and we had the chance to even it up,” Viqueens Head Coach Bruce Subbert said.
The Viqueens trailed for most of the first half and much of the second half, when thanks to shots around the perimeter by guard Sara Sederburg. Subbert said Sederburg’s shots kept the Viqueens in the game.
“She came in and did an excellent job,” Subbert said. “She was actually shooting the ball with confidence.”
Stanton was able to stay close in the fourth quarter with points by Carmen Subbert, Kara Allen and Rachel Sorensen.
“That was probably our best overall game of the year,” Subbert said. “I was proud of them after the game.”
Both teams struggled to score points in the first half. They combined to score 15 (nine for Villisca and six for Stanton) in the first quarter.
Stanton and Villisca traded points for most of the second quarter, until free throws with 0.2 seconds left by Amanda Focht gave the Blue Jays a 20-18 halftime lead.
The biggest lead of the game was when the Blue Jays jumped out to a 27-20 lead, thanks to a 7-0 to start the third quarter.
Subbert and Sederburg both finished with 14 points to lead the Viqueens. Sederburg in particular was 4-for-9 from beyond the three-point line. Subbert was two rebounds shy of getting a double-double for the game.
Allen scored seven points, while Sorensen and Ragen Anderson each recorded four.
With the split week, Stanton is now 2-4 for the season. They played Monday night at home against Riverside, but results weren’t available as of press time.
Tuesday night, they’ll be home again to play the Sidney Cowgirls.
