Stanton beats HC, loses to CA

CLARINDA — The Stanton Vikings basketball team lost Friday night to the Clarinda Academy Eagles, 57-30, at Clarinda Academy.

Clarinda Academy led in all four quarters as the Vikings scored double-digit points in a quarter once during the game and that was in the third quarter.

Greg Focht finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds (seven offensive), giving the senior a double-double. Jeff Marshall was Stanton’s leading scorer as he recorded 12 points and had eight rebounds.

Stanton had 40 rebounds total for the game, with 19 of them coming off the offensive glass. Clarinda Academy avenged a season opening loss to Stanton (71-61) Dec. 2. On Jan. 10, Stanton lost to the Nishnabotna Blue Devils at home, 57-49. Focht scored 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting to lead the Vikings. Focht also had seven rebounds, which tied him for a team high along with Austin Becthold and Greg Marshall. Jeff Marshall also scored double-digit points as he finished with 10 against the Blue Devils.

Cade Confer was shy of double-digit points as he scored eight off the bench for the Vikings.

Stanton did get a win Jan. 9 against Heartland Christian in Council Bluffs, 61-15. The Vikings outscored Heartland Christian in the first half 44-7, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Marshall and Focht were once again the leading scorers for Stanton as Marshall scored 13 points, while Focht recorded 12.

Becthold and Brent Hanson each finished with seven points in the win over Heartland Christian. Stanton has a 6-6 record for the season.

The Vikings played South Page Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Corner Conference Tournament. Results weren’t available as of press time, but we’ll post a scoring update on the Red Oak Express website.

Should Stanton win, they would be playing again Thursday night at home against the winner of East Mills-Villisca. That semifinal game would start at 7:45 p.m.
