Stanton, EM have big day at “Last Chance”

TABOR — Many of the area track and field teams took part in one last meet before state qualifying last Thursday when they competed at the Last Chance Coed Relays at Tabor May 6.

For the female division, Stanton and Villisca were third and fourth, while East Mills and Essex tied for eighth.

On the boys side, East Mills took third, while Villisca was sixth, Stanton placed eighth and Essex finished 10th.

Girls

Leading the way for Stanton in points were Carmen Subbert and Avery Taylor. Subbert had a win in the 100-meter hurdles when she ran a time of 16.77 seconds.

Taylor meanwhile finished second in the 200 and fourth in the 100-meter dash.

Both Subbert and Taylor contributed three relay race wins for Stanton. The Viqueens had their wins in the 4x100, 4x200 and shuttle hurdles.

Subbert was in all three races, while Taylor was in the 4x100 and 4x200.

In the 4x100, Taylor, Subbert, Macy Elwood and Logan Wagg ran a time of 53.83 seconds. In the 4x200, Taylor, Elwood, Subbert and Moriah Kammerer ran a time of 1:53.75.

The shuttle hurdle team had one of their best times of the season as Wagg, Elwood, Subbert and Lauren Stephens ran a time of 1:10.64.

Villisca had a couple of wins at the meet, courtesy of Heather Means and Morganne Haer.

Means won the 1,500 with a time of 5:45.21, 11 seconds ahead of Heartland Christian’s Stefanie Cunard.

Haer won the long jump title with a jump of 16’5.75”, beating Fremont-Mills’ Taryn Williams and Brandi Beem. Villisca’s Kaylea Wiechman was fifth in the event.

Jill Vanderhoof took second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Regan Burns of Essex placed third in the shot put.

Villisca had its other win in the distance medley when Haer, Wiechman, Bree Ann Fisher and Kelsey Means ran a time of 4:42.03.

Essex had its lone win in the 4x800 when the team of Haley Fundermann, Shea Jensen, Stephanie McBride and Jasmine Glasgo ran a time of 11:00.02, their best time of the season.

Boys

The East Mills boys team had a big day, winning three relay races in addition to wins for Nick Pittmon and Travis Tupper. East Mills won in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400.

Pittmon won in the 100-meter dash when he ran his best time of the season, 10.92 seconds. Tupper was less than a half second behind Pittmon.

Tupper’s win came in the 200-meter dash when he ran a time of 23.21 seconds, holding off Dane Livengood of Treynor by .14 seconds. Stanton’s Allen Hamilton finished third in the 200 with a time of 23.83 seconds.

For Villisca, Travis Herzberg and Austin Sorensen had a couple of runner-up finishes.

Herzberg took second in both the 400 and 800, while Sorensen was second in the 1,600.

Herzberg was several seconds behind the winner of the 400 (Kevin Herrick of Fremont-Mills) and the 800 (Blake Harvey of South Page).

Sorensen ran one of his best times of the year in the 1,600 (4:56.44) and was less than a second behind first place Kellin Chambers of Treynor.

Stanton had a couple of top finishes from Alex Becthold in the field events. Becthold took second in the discus and was sixth in the shot put.
