Stanton track proves they are young and hungry

Jeff Grebin has seen plenty in his eight years of being the head coach for Stanton boys track, and he said that this team has the potential to meet all of their personal goals this season.

“They have all set personal goals that will improve their athleticism,” he said. “They are working together to achieve those goals.”

They are working together with a high number of athletes as well. One of the strengths Grebin said in this years team has been the good turnout.

This season 22 athletes are on the Vikings track team, and even though 11 of those are freshmen and sophomores, they also have a state qualifier from two events coming back in Alex Becthold, who went for shot put and discus. Brady Johnson, Dustin Isaacson, Matt Wood, Connor Hultman, Drei Hampel, Chris Jones, Easton Blunt, Noah Kammerer and Cameron Walter are returning team members.

“I feel good about the athletes participating ,” Grebin said. “They are taking advantage of the great opportunity to work hard as a team to develop speed, grow physically stronger, mentally tougher and build comradery through practice adversity and meet competition.”

As for areas of improvement, the team speed Grebin mentioned is not up to his standard yet, he said. That, and a low number of sprinters will be things the Vikings will look to improve on early in 2016.

Grebin said there are a lot of tough opponents on the schedule for Stanton. Griswold, Lennox, Fremont-Mills, East Mills, Sidney, Nishnabota and Essex were all schools he mentioned as tough teams to beat.

He said the toughest team to take down in the Corner Conference this season should be Fremont-Mills.

After the season Stanton will say goodbye to four seniors, while moving up seven juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen.
