More than 450 high school seniors across Iowa will be honored Sunday, April 19 at the Seventh Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony to be held at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines starting at 1:00 p.m.

The recognition program is a combined effort on behalf of the Governor’s Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

Hosting the event and addressing the audience of 2,500-plus will be the Honorable Governor Chet Culver. Iowa’s 2009 Teacher of the Year, Linda Heffner, a teacher at Everett Elementary School in Sioux City, will be the keynote speaker. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Lang and Steve Oberg, Superintendent at Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto and IHSAA Board of Control chairperson, will also offer comments.

The seniors were selected by their high schools as the highest academic achievers. In addition, the student’s parents and favorite/most influential teacher are among the invited guests. Each student will receive a photo plaque and a certificate to commemorate their achievement. The selected teachers will also receive a certificate.
