Students attend FPSPI Conference

Sharon Webb of Red Oak, accompanied her granddaughter, Regan Jessen, and team mates, Aunica Harvey, Mikayla Moore and Elizabeth Wells of Corning to the Future Problem Solving Program International Conference at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. Also attending, Elementary Principal Myrna Rummer and parent Deena Moore. The sixth graders’ team coach, Leann Morris, was unable to attend.

The five day conference included opening ceremony with a parade of flags of the different states and countries represented, momento exchange, get acquainted social, tour to Devries Nature Conservancy, Environmental Pandemic Field Experience, competitions, skits, variety show, trip to Frankenmuth, Mich., dance and closing awards ceremony.

The overall subject the teams researched before the competition was “The Pandemic.” The specific topic they were given for the International Competition was “Outbreak of New Virus Pandemic Linked to Blue Nile River Flood Cleanup.”

The highlight was at the awards ceremony when it was announced the Corning Elementary Team placed in the top ten out of 56 teams. Each team member received a trophy and a plague was given to their school.

This was the 35th year anniversary for the FPSPI Conference. The 2010 International Conference will be held at the University of Wisconsin in Lacrosse, Wis. The state competition was held earlier this spring at Iowa State University in Ames.
