Supervisor Wiig resigns
The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will be looking for a replacement following the resignation of District 2 Supervisor Joshua Wiig.
Wiig, who was elected to the position in November 2014, gave his resignation, effective immediately, at the start of the Board of Supervisors meeting May 31. Wiig said changes in employment and other factors led to the decision to resign.
“I was hoping that things would turn out different, but they have not. I went through some changes in the last week, and so I’m coming before the supervisors to offer my resignation,” said Wiig.
Wiig then read a statement to the constituents, Montgomery County taxpayers, and the supervisors.
“It has been an honor to work for you and serve you. I handled the crucial conversations that needed to be done in order to properly represent you on the Fremont County Board of Supervisors. Due to the recent changes in my employment, I’m no longer able to give 100 percent effort everyday to make sure that you, the taxpayer, are represented properly,” Wiig said. “Please don’t feel disappointed. The current board is stable, handles tasks with a sense of urgency, and is fiscally responsible in handling the county’s business. We as a board have accomplished a lot in the last year and a half, and you can visibly see the results. I need your help now to look towards the future in order to find a representative who can dedicated the needed time to attend all the meetings and represent Montgomery County at his fullest capacity.”
Supervisors Chairman Bryant Amos then thanked Wiig for his service to the board since 2014.
“Josh, I want to thank you, and I sincerely wish it would have turned out differently with your employment,” Amos said.
Supervisor Mark Peterson told Wiig he had made a tough, but honorable decision.
“It took me all weekend to figure out, but it’s got to be done,” Wiig said.
Supervisor Donna Robinson agreed with Peterson’s comments regarding Wiig’s decision to resign.
“I wish you well in your position and employment, and I understand things change. I agree with Mark it was an honorable decision. We have enjoyed and appreciated your time here, and I think you have added to this board,” commented Robinson.
With the resignation coming so close to next week’s primary election June 7, it was asked what the procedure was for the board. County Auditor Stephanie Burke said the board was looking at either an appointment to fill Wiig’s term, or a special election.
“If you appoint someone, the constituents have a right to petition,” Burke said.
Further discussion on the subject is scheduled for next week’s Board of Supervisors meeting at 8:30 Thursday, June 9.
