SW Valley softball knocks off Clarinda

 CLARINDA — The Southwest Valley softball team scored its first win of the season Friday night when they defeated Clarinda 19-13.

Clarinda held a 6-4 lead through three innings and 8-6 after four. However, Southwest Valley rallied to score seven runs in the fifth inning and three more in both the six and seventh to get the win.

Kelsie Kinman had a four-hit night for the Timberwolves as she went 4-for-6 with two doubles, three stolen bases, four runs batted  in and one run scored.

Danica Sunderman meanwhile knocked in three runs as she went 2-for-5 with a home run, her first for the season.

Kim Hults was also 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

Ashtyn Grossnickle scored the most runs for Southwest Valley as the sophomore had five. Grossnickle was 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple, a walk and two stolen bases.

Both Kiara Roberts and Kylie McBride scored a couple of runs in the Southwest Valley win.

Lexi Bronner picked up the win for the Timberwolves, her first this season. Bronner pitched a complete game, giving up 13 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Bronner also helped on offense by going 1-for-4 with three runs scored and a fourth run knocked in.

Kendra Top, Dakota Sleep and Sydney Pontius also scored runs in the win.

Treynor 16, Southwest Valley 2

The Timberwolves scored two runs in the fifth inning of Thursday’s loss at home to Treynor.

The Cardinals scored 12 runs in the last three innings, including six in the seventh, to get the win.

Southwest Valley had three hits in the game, one each from Bronner, Sleep and Taylor Gaule. Hults and Top scored the runs.

Bedford 11, Southwest Valley 10

A six run seventh inning proved to be the difference as Bedford got the win late.

The Timberwolves had a 10-5 lead entering the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Kinman was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored. Gaule also scored three runs in the game. 

Pontius was the only other Southwest Valley player with multiple hits in the game as she was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored.

Creston 10, Southwest Valley 10

Southwest Valley began the season last Monday with a 10-0 loss in five innings to the Panthers. 

Creston scored two runs in the fifth inning to get the win via mercy rule.

Southwest Valley had only two baserunners the entire game, both (Gaule and Bronner) got on via walks.

Creston pitcher Haylee LaMasters got the five-inning no-hitter, striking out 11 Timberwolves.

Baseball

The Southwest Valley baseball team meanwhile lost Saturday to Wayne 11-6.

Wayne scored six runs in the six inning, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Keegan Longabaugh was 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs, three runs scored and four RBI.

Lane Peterson, Bryan Pearson and Ryan Carlson picked up the other three hits. Evan Baldwin, Pearson and Peterson had the other three runs.

Both Southwest Valley teams return to action Tuesday night when they hit the road to take on Mount Ayr.

The JV games start at 6 p.m., with the varsity games to follow.

Both teams are home Thursday for a JV/Varsity doubleheader against Lenox, which starts at 6 p.m.
