SWV gets win over Nodaway Valley

 The Southwest Valley softball team scored its lone win of the week last Tuesday when they beat Nodaway Valley 4-3.

The Timberwolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a four-run third inning. Nodaway Valley came close to tying it in the bottom of the seventh, but fell a run shy.

Ashtyn Grossnickle had the highlight by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Kim Hults, Lexi Bronner and Kiara Roberts scored the other runs.

Danica Sunderman was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Janelle Gibler went 1-for-2 with two walks. Shelby Nelson was 1-for-3 in the game.

Kylie McBride got the win, tossing a complete game and giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

The Timberwolves meanwhile lost their other game Friday night, 16-0 in five innings, to Martensdale-St. Marys.

Southwest Valley entered the fifth inning already trailing 11-0 when Martensdale-St. Marys tacked on five more runs.

The softball team was scheduled to play Monday night at Stanton, but the game was postponed and moved to Wednesday.

Baseball

The Southwest Valley baseball team meanwhile lost both of its games for the week.

They fell first to Nodaway Valley, last Tuesday, 14-4.

Southwest Valley took a 4-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings. However, the lead crumbled as Nodaway Valley rallied in the bottom half of the fifth to score 10 runs and take a 10-4 lead. The Wolverines scored four more in the sixth to get the win via the 10-run mercy rule.

Colten Drake went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and one RBI.

Trevor Holbrook went 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Nick Frederick was 1-for-3.

Southwest Valley then lost to Martensdale-St. Marys 11-1 in six innings.

Frederick was the leading hitter, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Bryan Pearson and Ryan Carlson both went 1-for-3.

Both Southwest Valley teams will be on the road Tuesday night when they play Bedford.

The baseball team also competed at the Bedford tournament, splitting their games. They lost game one to Orient-Macksburg 13-1. Cobb scored the run.

Southwest Valley then defeated Essex 18-3 in four innings.
