Tigers fall to Glenwood, Clarinda
RED OAK—The Red Oak boys’ basketball team lost Friday night to the Glenwood Rams at home, 65-46, on Senior Night.
Points by Tanner Johnson, as well as Andy Vial, kept the Tigers close during the first half. Red Oak in fact took the lead early in the first quarter and even had it late in the quarter, until the Rams took it back.
Red Oak stayed within 10 points of Glenwood throughout the third quarter, but trailed 47-34 by the end of it. The Rams would build upon their lead in the fourth and win the game.
“The killer was that three there right at the end of the third [quarter],” Red Oak Head Coach Brad Schlieman said. “We had to scramble a little bit, trying to get back into it and they did a good job spreading the floor, making us chase, running time off and then they hit free throws.”
Johnson finished the game as Red Oak’s leading scorer with 23 points. Johnson has been dealing with an ankle injury since the holiday break, according to Coach Schlieman. Johnson sat out for both games against Kuemper Catholic and Atlantic, to allow the injury to heal.
“Even Tuesday his first game back, he wasn’t all the way there yet, but we could tell in practice throughout the week, he was getting there and he had a nice night,” Schlieman said.
The seniors were also able to score several points for the game as Vial scored seven points, while Danny Carlson had four.
“It was senior night tonight and we have a nice group of seniors,” Schlieman said, mentioning Carlson, Vial, Bergren and Dixon Nelson. “They’ve improved so much over the last four years and it’s been fun to work with them, even funner just to get to know them as people. We’re going to miss them dearly in our program.”
Last Tuesday, Red Oak lost to the Clarinda Cardinals, 64-33, at Clarinda High School.
The Tigers stayed close with the Cardinals in the first quarter, as they were only down by three points. However, Clarinda outscored Red Oak 19-3 in the second, to take a commanding 34-14 lead. The Cardinals would build upon their lead in the second half.
Jordan Nelson finished the game as Red Oak's leading scorer. Nelson recorded eight points off the bench for the Tigers and had a season high four steals.
Johnson finished with seven points on 3-for-8 shooting with four rebounds. Walker had five points, while Jose Perez and Bergren each scored four.
The Tigers traveled to Villisca Monday night to take on the Blue Jays. Results weren't available as of press time. Thursday night, Red Oak hits the road again to take on Tri-Center.
