Tigers fall short versus Kuemper
RED OAK —The Red Oak softball team concluded a rough week on Friday evening with their doubleheader against Kuemper Catholic and it won’t be any easier this week.
The Tigers have three conference doubleheaders, including one Monday night at home against Glenwood.
Last week’s schedule ended for the Tigers after they were swept in a doubleheader by the Knights 13-0 in five innings and 15-1 in three.
Kuemper Catholic attacked early and often with their bats as they’ve had the best offensive output of any team the young Tigers have faced this season.
In the first game, Hailey Fada and Ashlee Young both went 1-for-2 to lead Red Oak. In game two, Red Oak scored its only run in the second inning, thanks to an RBI groundout by Maddie Wendt. Morgan Akers, who was courtesy running for Shelbie Perez, scored the run.
Perez was 1-for-1, while Kamryn Buntrock went 1-for-2.
Red Oak’s non-conference loss of the week came last Wednesday in Council Bluffs against Abraham Lincoln, who won 6-1. The Tigers hung in there with the recently-ranked-in-5A Lynx.
Red Oak struck first in the top of the second thanks to a RBI hit by Young that scored Buntrock. The Tigers were up 1-0 until the Lynx tied it in the bottom half of the inning.
The difference in the game was the third inning, when Abraham Lincoln scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Lynx scored a run in both the fifth and sixth inning.
Red Oak had hitters record big hits, including Jasmine Forward, who went 2-for-3 with two singles. Buntrock was 1-for-3, as was Young.
Red Oak began the week last Tuesday when they lost 10-0 in five innings to the Shenandoah.
Red Oak plays a varsity doubleheader Wednesday against Atlantic. The game will be played at the Atlantic softball field starting at 5:30 p.m.
It’s back on the road Thursday for Red Oak when they play their third doubleheader of the week against Denison-Schleswig. The action kicks off at 5:30 p.m.
Red Oak will also return to Council Bluffs Friday and Saturday to compete at the Abraham Lincoln Invitational.
