Tigers fall to top teams at Lynx Tournament

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Red Oak softball team lost all four of their games Friday and Saturday at the Lynx Classic Tournament hosted by Abraham Lincoln High School.

The Tigers first loss was to Sioux City East 15-1 in three innings. Red Oak’s lone run in the game was on a Maddie Holmgren RBI single in the first inning, which scored Makelti White and gave the Tigers the early lead.

Both Sarah Behrens and Shelbie Perez picked up hits in the game against Sioux City East.

The next game was against Thomas Jefferson; they lost 7-1 in five innings.

The Tigers scored in the first inning and led for a couple more innings. However, Thomas Jefferson scored six runs in the fourth to take the lead.

Angela Mahoney scored the run for Red Oak as she went 2-for-3 in the game with a single, double and three stolen bases. White had the hit which allowed Mahoney to score. Both Bailey Hankins and Kendra Hardy picked up hits.

Red Oak lost their third game to Abraham Lincoln 7-0. The Lynx took a 1-0 lead and never looked back.

Mahoney, Holmgren, Behrens, Maranda Gowdy and Dana Marsden all went 1-for-3 in the game. The Tigers had chances, but left eight base runners on for the game.

Behrens pitched the game for Red Oak, tossing a complete game with six hits, two earned runs and no walks.

In Red Oak’s final tournament game, they fell to the second ranked team in Class 3A Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 12-0 in three innings. Sergeant Bluff-Luton scored 10 of their 12 runs in the first inning.

Holmgren had the only two hits in the game for Red Oak as she went 2-for-2.

Red Oak lost both of their Hawkeye Ten games last week. The most recent conference loss was to Shenandoah 11-1.

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Holmgren RBI hit that scored Mahoney.

Red Oak held the lead for a couple of innings until the fourth when Shenandoah rallied to score five runs. The Fillies put the game on ice with a six run seventh inning.

Holmgren led the way once again by going 3-for-3. Holmgren is Red Oak’s leading hitter this season. Her .356/.367/.390 leads the team.

In addition to Holmgren picking up hits, Mahoney, Marsden, Hardy and Bailey Hankins each had a hit.

Red Oak began the week with a 14-0 loss to Glenwood, last Monday. Glenwood scored seven runs in each of the first two innings to win the game in three. The Tigers were held hitless in the three innings.

The Tigers are scheduled for two games this week. It started Monday when they traveled to Creston to face the Panthers. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Tuesday night, Red Oak will be home when they host the Harlan Cyclones for a doubleheader. The action starts at 5:30 p.m.
