Tigers get first shutout win since 2012 during tourney
ATLANTIC—The Red Oak softball team picked up its second win of the season Saturday during the Atlantic Softball Tournament.
Red Oak recorded a 4-0 win against Audubon, the first shutout victory for the team since 2012 when the Tigers defeated Griswold at the Creston tournament.
Zoey Welter was the star for Red Oak as she tossed her first career shutout, allowing four hits and striking out five Wheelers at the plate.
Hailey Fada was responsible for two of the four runs as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.
Kamryn Buntrock went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Sarah Behrens was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Courtesy runner Morgan Akers scored the other run for the Tigers.
Red Oak came close to getting a second win during the tournament, but lost 3-2 in extra innings to Tri-Center.
Tri-Center scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. The Tigers trailed 2-0 early on, but recovered to score two in the fifth to tie the game.
Welter once again pitched solid for the Tigers, going 7 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits.
Red Oak was held to four hits in the game. Buntrock, Fada, Tannah Halvin and Alexis Wingfield had the hits. Fada and Akers scored the runs.
The Tigers’ other game was a 12-2 loss to Exira-EHK. The game ended in five innings after Exira-EHK scored six runs to get the 10-run mercy rule.
Emily Peterson and Sydney Streicher scored the runs for Red Oak as both went 1-for-2 at the plate. Wingfield, Behrens and Fada also went 1-for-2.
With the win, Red Oak now has more wins at this point in the season than they did all of last year.
Red Oak vs. Lewis Central
The Tigers were swept in a doubleheader versus Lewis Central Thursday night in Council Bluffs. They lost the games 12-0 and 7-0.
In the 7-0 loss, Red Oak had five hits in the game, but missed out on sending a runner across home plate.
Jasmine Forward, Fada and Behrens were all 1-for-3 at the plate. Sydney Streicher went 1-for-2, while Emily Peterson was 1-for-1. The Tigers were held hitless in the 12-0 loss.
Red Oak vs. Essex
Red Oak kept close with Essex during their home game last Wednesday, but lost 12-4 to the Trojanettes.
The difference in the game was the late innings when Essex scored four runs each in the sixth and seventh to pull away.
Red Oak was down 4-0 after three innings. However, they rallied back in the fourth to score four runs and tie the game 4-4.
The first run was scored on a Shelbie Perez RBI single that scored Behrens. After Fada loaded the bases with a single, Ashlee Young smacked a two-RBI single into left field to cut the lead to 4-3.
Designated hitter Maddie Wendt followed up with another RBI hit to tie the game 4-4.
Pitcher Sara Skalberg got Essex out of the inning before the Tigers could cause any more damage.
The Tigers had an opportunity to take the lead in the fifth inning when both Behrens and Perez were in scoring position with two outs. However, Essex once again got out of the jam, leaving the two Tigers on base.
Perez was the leading hitter for Red Oak, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Fada, Young and Wendt all went 1-for-3 in the game.
Behrens and Buntrock both went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Essex’s top batter was Amber Ohnmacht, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Skalberg, Daiton Martin, Bethany Johnson and Jescenia Mosley all had two-hit games for the Trojanettes.
Red Oak vs. Shenandoah
The Tigers started the week against their heated rival as they lost 9-3 at home, last Monday.
Shenandoah jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second and stayed ahead for the remainder of the game. Red Oak scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth.
Streicher scored the first run for Red Oak on a Perez bases-loaded walk in the third inning. Streicher helped knock in the other two runs, as Fada and Young scored.
Fada was the leading hitter in the game, going 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. Young meanwhile went 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Behrens, Streicher and Alexis Wingfield all had hits in the game.
Red Oak returns to action Tuesday at home when they host Clarinda as part of a JV/varsity doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers play again Wednesday at home when they host a JV/varsity doubleheader versus Southwest Valley with a 5:30 p.m. start time.
They’re home again Thursday night for a varsity doubleheader against St. Albert. The doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m.
Red Oak wraps up the week with the Creston softball tournament, which takes place Friday and Saturday.
