TRUMP WINS!

Americans are casting final votes in today’s election, but in Montgomery County and across Iowa, students have already made their (non-counting) selections.
Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate reported the results of a youth straw poll conducted last Tuesday, in which more than 57,000 students from more than 250 schools across the state participated.
Locally and statewide, Republican Donald Trump was the winner in the presidential election.
Red Oak, Essex, Stanton, and  Southwest Valley  pupils participated.

Red Oak
Breaking down the votes from each of the area schools, of the students taking part in the Red Oak School District, there were 72 votes cast for Trump, and 58 votes cast for Clinton.
Grassley picked up 71 votes from the student participants, and Judge received 41 votes.
In the final race, Young received 75 student votes, while Mowrer picked up 48.

Stanton
The outcome of the straw poll in the Stanton School District was much the same, with students casting 68 votes for Trump and 13 votes for Clinton in the presidential race.
In the U.S. Senate race, Grassley received 66 votes to Judge’s 18, and in the House race, Young received 67 student votes to Mowrer’s 14.

Southwest Valley
In the Southwest Valley School District, the students favored Trump for president, with 47 votes to 16 votes for Clinton.
Grassley picked up 60 votes in the senate race, and Judge had 11 votes. Young was the top votegetter in the house race, 60 votes to 13 votes for Mowrer.

Essex
In the Essex School District, Trump was the students pick for president, with 52 votes. Clinton received 13 votes.
Rounding out the votes, Grassley received 66 votes from Essex student voters, while Judge earned 14, and Young received 69 votes to Mowrer’s 16.

East Mills
Trump was the winner in the East Mills District, with 10 votes to 8 votes for Clinton. Grassley won over Judge by a vote of 10 to three. Young was the winner of his race as well, by a vote of 14 to four over Jim Mowrer.

Pate was less concerned with the results than the educational experience of voting.
“I think it was a great opportunity for the students to see first-hand how the process works. It also gives them a running start for the next election cycle and also receive a little tutoring at the same time, so they’ll have a good base of knowledge for Iowa’s elections process,” Secretary Pate said. “I hope this fired them up and will also spur them to encourage their parents, neighbors and friends to get out and vote.”
Based on the statewide results, Trump was the top votegetter with 46 percent of the vote. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton received 36 percent of the vote, and Liberatarian candidate Gary Johnson received 7 percent.

In the U.S. Sentate Race, Republican incumbent Charles Grassley received 62 percent of the vote, and Democratic challenger Patty Judge received 25 percent.

For the District 3 seat in the U.S. House of representatives, Republican incumbent David Young earned 56 percent of the vote, while Democratic challenger Jim Mowrer received 31 percent of the vote.

Election Day is today across the U.S. Polls in Montgomery County are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
