Vikings off to 3-1 start in baseball

 STANTON — The Stanton Vikings baseball team has won three of its first four games to start the 2014 season.

Their most recent win came Friday night at home when they defeated Fremont-Mills 10-6.

Brady Johnson had the big game, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Cade Confer was also 2-for-4 with a double.

Thursday night, Stanton crushed Essex 16-6 in six innings. The Vikings scored three runs in the sixth to get the win via mercy rule.

Dustin Isaacson and Confer both had three-hit games.

Isaacson went 3-for-5 with a run scored and another run batted in.

Confer was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four more driven in.

David Sorensen and Kyle Peterson both had two hit games for the Vikings. Sorensen went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Peterson was 2-for-4 and also had two runs and two RBIs.

Several players had multiple runs in the game, including Chris Jones, Johnson, Camaran Walter and Brandon Peterson.

Stanton scored its first win of the year last Tuesday by defeating Sidney 5-2. The Vikings scored four runs in the second inning, after giving up two in the first, to secure the victory. Stanton added an insurance run in the seventh inning.

Confer led the way by going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Isaacson and Sorensen were both 2-for-4 at the plate for the Vikings.

Stanton started out the season with a 12-2 loss last Monday in Malvern versus East Mills.

East Mills scored 10 runs in the fifth and sixth inning to get the win via the 10-run mercy rule.

Sorensen went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Jones scored the other run as he was 1-for-2.

Stanton was scheduled to be back in action Monday versus Nishnabotna. Results weren’t available as of press time.
