Vikings knocked out by Sidney in Corner quarterfinals

CLARINDA — The Stanton Vikings were knocked out of the quarterfinals of the Corner Conference boys basketball tournament last Tuesday against the Sidney Cowboys, 41-33.

Stanton took a 17-10 lead at halftime and still led 26-21 by the end of the third quarter. However, the Cowboys outscored the Vikings in the fourth quarter 20-7, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Greg Focht finished the game as Stanton's leading scorer with 12 points with eight rebounds and three assists.

Brent Hanson was the next high scorer for Stanton as he recorded seven points and grabbed five rebounds.

Andrew Cerven had four points, while Jeff Marshall and Collin Strickland each had three for the game.

The loss last Tuesday was Stanton's third straight and the Vikings have now lost six of their last seven.

Last Tuesday’s tournament loss was also their second straight quarterfinals exit from the Corner Conference Tournament. Stanton is now 6-7 for the season.

They look to get back to .500 Tuesday night when they host the South Page Rebels.

Stanton won the last encounter between both teams Dec. 6, 54-36.

Friday night, Stanton will travel to Malvern as they take on the East Mills Wolverines. This will be the first meeting between both teams this season.
