Villisca boys has several top finishers at area meets

GRISWOLD—The Villisca Boys track and field team took home fifth place from the Griswold Boys Tigers Relays, held at Griswold High School Thursday.

Villisca finished with a score of 38 points in a field of six teams. Griswold won the team title with a score of 176 points.

Villisca’s key highlights came in the relay races. Their best finish of the meet was in the 4x800, when they finished second behind Griswold.

The team of Marcus Taylor, Austin Sorensen, Jacob Arnold and Travis Herzberg ran a time of 9:32.90, 22 seconds behind Griswold.

The Blue Jays also had a pair of third place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x400.

In the 4x200, the team of Colten Drake, Taylor, Damon Sunderman and Gunner McCuen ran a time of 1:50.49, about eight seconds behind the winners of the race, Griswold.

For the 4x400, Taylor, Sunderman, McCuen and Herzberg ran a time of 4:05.16. Riverside and Griswold, the top two teams of the race, both ran sub-four minute times.

Gunner McCuen provided one of the top highlights for the Blue Jays with a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash. McCuen ran a time of 26 seconds, less than two-tenths of a second ahead of Griswold’s Ethan Peck and Riverside’s Cole Potter.

Travis Herzberg finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 1:06.61. Austin Sorensen also had a fifth place finish, but it was in the 800-meter run. Sorensen recorded a time of 2:25.82.

On April 16, Villisca took sixth out of eight teams competing at the Stanton Vikings track meet, held at Stanton High School.

Villisca’s big highlight was their first win of the season in the 4x800 relay. They also had a third place finish in the 4x400 relay.

The Blue Jays will be on the road Tuesday afternoon as they compete in Audubon’s track meet. The meet is expected to start at 4:30.
