Villisca keeps on winning against conference, area foes

SIDNEY—The Villisca Blue Jays came away with the win Monday night in the quarterfinals of the Corner Conference Tournament against the Sidney Cowgirls, 50-29.

Villisca is now on a five-game winning streak.

They will take on the Nishnabotna Blue Devils, who defeated Essex Monday night 49-41, in the semifinals.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Villisca High School.

Friday night, Villisca defeated the Essex Trojanettes in Essex, 57-37. The Blue Jays outscored Essex 32-10 in the first half, which made the difference in the game.

Jill Vanderhoof scored 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting with nine rebounds and four steals. Amanda Focht was the next highest scorer as she recorded eight points, but was the leading rebounder with 14 boards.

The Blue Jays picked up bench points from Heather Means (seven) and Sheri Schaaf (five).

Last Tuesday, Villisca defeated the East Mills Wolverines, 59-37 at home. Vanderhoof, Focht and Morganne Haer scored double-digit points in the win over East Mills.

Vanderhoof led in scoring with 14 points, including 4-for-6 from the free throw line, while Focht and Haer had 13 and 10 respectively.
Schaaf had another big game off the bench as the senior scored eight points, adding a season high of five steals.

Villisca also won Jan. 9 against Corning, at home. The Blue Jays had the lead for most of the game and were able to hold off a late rally by the Red Raiders.

“They were taller than us, so that made a difference,” Villisca Head Coach Donna Williams said about Corning and their rebounding. “If you don’t get a body on them, they’re going to be able to go over the top of you.”

Vanderhoof once again had another big game as the junior scored 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Haer and Focht each scored seven points, while Mikayla Dolch recorded six in the win.

The Blue Jays are now 12-1 for the season.
