Villisca starts season 2-2

VILLISCA—The Villisca Bluejays softball team finishes their first week of the season with a 2-2 record, following a pair of home losses late last week.

The most recent loss for Villisca came last Friday when they fell to the Essex Trojanettes 13-3, in five innings.

Essex scored 11 of their 13 runs for the game in the fourth and fifth inning, to take a commanding lead. Villisca was able to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but they weren’t able to break the 10-run margin.

Jill Vanderhoof was the only Villisca player to record multiple hits for the game as she was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Casaundra Currin and Kendra Top were the other Bluejays to score runs in the game.

Last Thursday, Villisca lost their first game of the season, 6-5, to Adair-Casey. The Bluejays jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning, but Adair-Casey rallied in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.

Villisca tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

Adair-Casey scored a run in the sixth and seventh inning, while Villisca scored one run in the seventh.

Currin was the lone Bluejay with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3. Heather Means scored two runs in the game, while Morganne Haer, Kim Hults and Tiffany Gibbons each scored one run.

Lexi Bronner pitched the game for Villisca as she tossed a complete game, giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits, with seven walks and 11 strikeouts.

Villisca 10, Orient-Macksburg 3

Villisca was able to score the 10-3 win against Orient-Macksburg last Wednesday.

Villisca jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings and never looked back.

Several Bluejays batters recorded multiple hits, including Haer, who was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two stolen bases.

Vanderhoof, Bronner, Currin and Focht each had two hits. Vanderhoof was 2-for-4 with a doubles and two runs scored.

Additionally, Vanderhoof was on the mound as she picked up the win for Villisca, pitching a complete game and giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits with six walks and six strikeouts.

Villisca 11, Mount Ayr 9

The Bluejays opened the 2013 season with an 11-9 home opener win against Mount Ayr, last Tuesday.

Villisca jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first two innings, before Mount Ayr rallied to tie the game 6-6, several innings later.

Villisca was able to score five runs in the fourth and fifth inning to lead 11-6. Mount Ayr wasn’t done scoring though as they recorded three runs in the top of the sixth to chip away at the lead.

However, the Bluejays were able to hold on and get the win.

Bronner was the winning pitcher for Villisca as she pitched a complete game, giving up nine runs (five earned) on five hits, with six walks and five strikeouts.

Vanderhoof was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and three runs scored. Focht meanwhile was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Means was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.

Tuesday night, Villisca was home as they hosted the Stanton Viqueens. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Friday night, Villisca will be on the road as they face the Sidney Cowgirls. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
