Viola M. Silk, 96

Viola M. Silk, 96, of Elliott, died on July 22, 2009, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.

Viola Marie (Galitz) Silk was born April 4, 1913, in Albion, Neb., the daughter of Henry Emil and Louise Ann Johanna (Schomburg) Galitz.

Viola grew up and attended school in Wolbach, Neb. and graduated with the class of 1931. Following high school, Viola taught school for a couple of years. On Dec. 23, 1933, she married Leo Raymond Silk in Grand Island, Neb. They had three children: Beverly, Sharon and Craig.

Leo and Viola moved to Iowa on July 7, 1937, and engaged in farming with one cow and four chickens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; three sisters, Dorothy Galitz in infancy, Maye (Harry) Atwell; Irene (Charlie) Berney; two brothers, Emil Galitz and Raymond Galitz; and a grandson Jay Wibbels.

Survivors include her children, Beverly (Melvin) Wibbels of Boise, Idaho, Sharon (Marlin) Fay of Camden, Tenn., Craig (Diane) Silk of Elliott; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert (Delores) Galitz of Hastings, Neb., a sister-in-law, Mary Galitz of Oakland.

Funeral services were held on July 27 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Griswold with Rev. Celeste Waymire officiating.

A memorial fund is being established.
