Viqueens get first win with victory over Trojanettes

 STANTON — The Stanton Viqueens picked up their first win of the season Thursday evening when they defeated Essex at home 15-12.

Stanton jumped out to a 10-1 lead after two innings, but the Trojanettes scored six in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the lead to 10-9.

Essex fought to stay close as Stanton scored a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning.

The Trojanettes scored five runs in the final four innings, but it wasn’t enough as the Viqueens secured the victory.

The top of the line-up for Stanton led the way in terms of hitting and run production.

Lead-off pitcher Macy Elwood, who was credited with the win, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Carmen Subbert was also 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Outfielder Devin Druivenga went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.

Erin DeKay, Logan Wagg and Heidi Vanderholm each scored two runs in the win.

Leading the way for Essex was Regan Burns, who went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

Kym Graham was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Viqueens lost their other two games for the week to conference opponents.

The most recent loss came at home Friday night to Fremont-Mills 12-5.

The Knights scored six runs in the second inning to take a 7-4 lead and stayed ahead the rest of the way.

Stanton jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning.

Leading the way for Stanton was Subbert, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Druivenga was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, as was DeKay.

Chelsea Weis was also 3-for-4 on the night with a run scored, a RBI and a stolen base.

Vanderholm was 2-for-4, while Lauren Stephens was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Last Monday, Stanton lost to East Mills 14-6.

East Mills jumped ahead early and never looked back.

Elwood went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Subbert went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

The Viqueens will be on the road for most of the week.

It started Monday night when they traveled to Hamburg to play Nishnabotna. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Wednesday night, Stanton faces Orient-Macksburg.

Their lone home game for the week is Friday night when they host the Sidney Cowgirls.
