Viqueens knocked off at home by Essex

STANTON — The Stanton Viqueens lost Friday night to the Essex Trojanettes in Corner Conference softball action, 12-7.

With the score at 8-7, the Trojanettes scored four runs  in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach for Stanton. Stanton was able to get runners on in the bottom half of the inning, but weren’t able to score.

Essex had another big inning in the fourth when they posted four runs to take an 8-3 lead. Stanton responded with three runs to cut the deficit.

Several players had big games for Stanton, including Lauren Stephens, who was 2-for-3 with a home run, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Stephens is the second Viqueen to have a home run this season, joining Rachel Sorensen.

Erin DeKay was 3-for-4 at the plate, leading the Viqueens in hitting. DeKay had a double, a run scored and two more runs driven in.

Carmen Subbert had a big game in the lead-off spot as she was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Macy Elwood also had a two hit game as she finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Last Thursday, Stanton defeated Nishnabotna, 4-2. Stanton had a three-run fourth inning to take the lead in the fourth inning and stay ahead for good.

Subbert, Elwood, Ragen Anderson and Kimber Wagg had the runs in the game for Stanton.  Emily Oster helped drive in two of those runs; she was 1-for-3 in the game. Roey Sink pitched a gem of a game, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven Blue Devils.

Last Wednesday, Stanton split a doubleheader with Orient-Macksburg. They won one of the games 14-0 after four innings, but lost the other 6-5.

In the loss, Stanton had a 5-3 lead after four innings. However, Orient-Macksburg scored three runs in the final three innings, including two in the bottom of the seventh, to force the split.

Stanton started the week Tuesday with a 6-4 win over East Mills. The Viqueens were able to hold off a rally in the final inning to get the win. East Mills scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Sink had a big game at the plate as she was 2-for-4 with a run scored, two stolen bases and two runs batted in. DeKay was 2-for-3 and also drove in two runs. Wagg was the only other Viqueen to have two hits in the game.

Stanton is now 4-4 for the season. They will get a chance to get revenge on Essex as they play each other this Friday night.

The Viqueens week started Monday with a road game against Corning. Tuesday night, they’ll be on the road as they play the Sidney Cowgirls. Their lone home game of the week takes place Thursday night against Fremont-Mills.

Finally on Saturday, they’ll compete in a tournament at Shenandoah, playing against the Fillies, as well as East Mills and Missouri Valley.
