Viqueens open season with overtime win, Clarinda Academy blowout

CLARINDA—Fresh off a double overtime victory at Bedford, the Stanton Viqueens basketball team blew out the Clarinda Academy Eagles in Clarinda Friday night, 97-23.

The Viqueens scored at least 23 points in every quarter, including 27 in the third.
Four Viqueens finished the night in double-figures with scoring. Kadie Subbert led the way for the Viqueens with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Paige Peterson finished with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Sara Sederburg and Shelby Wagg were the other two to finish the night in double-digit scoring, combining for 21.
Molly Haley came close to the 10-point margin, but finished with eight points and leading in rebounding with 11 boards.
Stanton held off Bedford on the road, last Tuesday night, to win their first game of the season, 66-55, in double overtime.
Both sides kept it close early, but the Viqueens led 11-9 at the end of one. Bedford outscored Stanton in the second quarter 14-5, and took the lead 23-16 at halftime.
“Offensively, we did not play well at all in the first half,” Head Coach Bruce Subbert said. “We just had a hard time getting into any type of offense.”
The Viqueens cut the deficit to two, but Bedford still led 35-33. Stanton eventually tied the game and forced overtime.
“The message was let’s just go out and gradually get back into the game,” Subbert said. “It really didn’t take us too long to tie it up.”
Stanton had a 42-39 lead late in the fourth when Bedford tied the game on a three-pointer. The score was 44-44 at the end of regulation.
It stayed close after the first overtime and Stanton again had the lead late. However, a Bedford buzzer beater with a missed foul shot to win the game, forced the second overtime. The score at the end of the first overtime was 54-54.
Both sides forced a second overtime, but the Viqueens jumped ahead to win a close one. The difference was the free throw shooting as Stanton finished the second overtime 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Ragen Anderson led Stanton with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Anderson was also 3-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line, leading the Viqueens.
Subbert finished the night one rebound shy of a double-double. Subbert scored 16 points, to go along with the nine rebounds. Wagg also came close to a double-double as she finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
With the wins, Stanton is now 2-0 for the season and 1-0 in conference.
The Viqueens play South Page Tuesday night in their first home game of the season, with tip-off taking place at 6:15. They’ll then hit the road Friday to play Shenandoah.
