Viqueens sweep the field at Shenandoah Tourament

SHENANDOAH — The Stanton Viqueens completed their weekend by winning the Shenandoah Volleyball Tournament Saturday at Shenandoah High School.

The Viqueens picked up wins against Creston, Essex, Fremont-Mills, Lenox, Rock Port and Shenandoah. Only their match against Shenandoah went three games.

Stanton lost the first game to Shenandoah, 25-23. They responded by winning games two and three 21-15 and 21-9.
In the win against Shenandoah, Carmen Subbert recorded 16 kills out of 26 attack attempts.

Rachel Sorensen had seven kills, while Ragen Anderson (13) and Roey Sink (12) combined for 25 assists in the win.
Stanton defeated Creston 21-11 and 21-13 in the championship match.

Subbert’s five kills led the way for the Viqueens in their win.

Last Thursday evening, Stanton defeated East Mills, 3-0, at East Mills High School in Malvern.

“It feels good. The girls were excited, they were anxious to get out and play hard tonight and they just did that,” Stanton Head Coach Jody Druivenga said.

The Viqueens handily won the first game, 25-7. Starting with a Kara Allen kill, Stanton scored the final nine points of the first game. Allen finished with four kills, as well as two blocks.

That momentum continued in game two as Stanton scored the first eight points.

East Mills cut into the lead, but spent the rest of the second game playing catch-up. Stanton won game two, 25-18. Once more, the Viqueens would dominate, this time in the third game.

They started game three scoring 10 of the first 11 points.

From there, it was all Stanton as East Mills never got closer than eight points. The Viqueens won game three, 25-10.

“They just wanted to get back out there and compete again,” Druivenga said. “They were ready and couldn't wait to get at it.”

Rachel Sorensen finished the match leading Stanton in kills. The senior had seven kills out of 18 attempts with nine digs.
Subbert had five kills and 11 digs, as well as two serving aces for the match.

Sink had a successful time setting up the Viqueen attack as she recorded 17 assists. Anderson, who had five kills, had the other six assists for Stanton.

With their wins last week, Stanton has started the season with a 12-1 record.

The Viqueens finally get to play at home for the first time this season on their new floor Tuesday night.
Stanton has practiced on the new floor for the last few weeks.

Because it was installed during the summer, Stanton practiced for much of the summer in Red Oak.
Tuesday night, they will play Clarinda Academy.

They’ll spend the next week and a half at home for matches.
