Viqueens win 10th straight Corner Conference title

 It’s another checkpoint reached for the Stanton Viqueens during the 2013 season.

Stanton won its 10th straight Corner Conference volleyball tournament title during Thursday night’s final in Farragut as they defeated Fremont-Mills 3-1.

Fremont-Mills won the first game 25-12, but Stanton recovered and rallied to win the next three 25-15, 25-19 and 25-9.

Carmen Subbert finished with 23 kills and 10 digs to lead the Viqueens. This was Subbert’s fourth appearance in the Corner Conference championship match.

Heidi Vanderholm was the only other Viqueen with kills close to double-digit figures as she recorded nine out of 27 attack attempts. Erin DeKay had five kills, as well as five block assists. Macy Elwood meanwhile led the team in assists with 21, while Logan Wagg finished with eight.

Essex finishes fourth

In the consolation match, the Essex Trojanettes lost in four games to the Nishnabotna Blue Devils. Nishnabotna won games one and two 25-22 and 25-23. Essex stayed alive though by winning game three 25-18. The Blue Devils halted the rally and won game four 25-17. 

This is Essex’s first fourth place finish since the 2011 season when they lost to the Villisca Bluejays.

Kym Graham had the only double-digit kill total for the Trojanettes as she finished with 11 out of 30 attack attempts.

Essex had 65 digs in the consolation match. Skylar Ross set a season-high for digs with 25 to lead the Trojanettes. Seana Perkins also had a season high in digs with 13 and led the team in assists with 21, which is one short of her season high.

Joscenia Mosley recorded nine kills, while Regan  Burns had five kills and Sara Skalberg and Amber Ohnmacht each had three.

Semifinals

Stanton and Essex faced off in the semifinals last Tuesday at Stanton High School, with the Viqueens coming out on top 3-0.

Stanton was aggressive early and jumped out to an 8-3 lead. After an Essex timeout, the Viqueens scored a few more points, before the Trojanettes slowed down the attack.

Essex managed a few more points in game one, getting the Viqueen lead down to eight points. However, Stanton stayed aggressive and scored 10 consecutive points to win the first game 25-7.

Momentum stayed on Stanton’s side for game two as Haley Weis’ serves caused problems for the Trojanettes. The Viqueens jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start game two.

Essex settled down and scored seven straight to take the lead briefly. Stanton responded with another rally, including kills by Erin DeKay, who blasted one into the back row past Burns.

The Viqueens maintained their lead and won the second game 25-16.

Game three started the same as in game two as Weis’ serves caused struggles for the Trojanettes. Weis finished the match 16-for-17 in serves with a team-high five aces. The Viqueens jumped out to a 6-1 lead when Essex called timeout.

Following the timeout, Stanton’s lead grew as they were soon ahead by double-digits in the game and well on their way to another Corner Conference championship appearance.

Essex rallied and tried to close the gap late, but it wasn’t enough as the Viqueens won game three 25-17.

Subbert had 13 kills to lead the Viqueens. DeKay had eight kills, while Vanderholm finished with six. Elwood meanwhile had 15 assists.

Essex had nine kills in total for the semifinal. Ohnmacht and Mosley each had three kills to lead Essex. Burns had two kills, while Graham had one. Burns led the team in digs with 13.

Essex 3, East Mills 1

The Trojanettes advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over East Mills in Malvern.

Essex and East Mills split the first two games, with Essex winning 25-16 in game one and East Mills winning 25-16 in game two. Essex won games three and four though 25-16 and 25-17.

For East Mills, Stephanie Frink had 12 kills and 13 digs both team highs. 

Kendra Croghan had nine kills and 11 digs, Jessie Doyle had six kills and 10 digs.

Elizabeth Walker had three kills, 15 assists and 12 digs and Emmy Duysen had 17 assists.

Stanton 3, South Page 0

The Viqueens began the first round of the tournament with a 3-0 win versus South Page, last Monday.

Stanton won the games 25-5, 25-8 and 25-8.

DeKay led Stanton with a team-high 11 kills and had four blocks and three serving aces.

Subbert, as well as Haley Weis, each had 10 kills for the Viqueens. Elwood had 15 assists, while Subbert finished with seven digs. Weis also had five aces and was 17-for-18 in serving.

The Viqueens are back in action Tuesday night when they travel to the Boys and Girls Club in Council Bluffs to play Heartland Christian.

Thursday night, they’ll be home for a match versus the Sidney Cowgirls.
