Voters pass tax issue

The Montgomery County Auditor’s office reported that by a vote of 142 to 36, Red Oak voters approved a one percent sales and services tax effective July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2014. Tax revenues will be allocated as follows: 50 percent , property tax relief, 40 percent , public safety, five percent for the Red Oak Industrial Foundation new jobs initiative and community marketing, and five percent toward the creation and development of new recreation projects.

A second vote, 146-13, will collect the one percent local sales and services tax in the unincorporated area of Montgomery County for the same period and be used as follows: 100% for property tax relief in the unincorporated areas, with 80 percent for secondary roads, 10 percent for public safety, and five percent to both the Montgomery County fair and the courthouse repairs.
