Walker, Subbert receive additional state honors

 The awards and accolades continue to pile in for two area girls basketball players as Red Oak’s Kate Walker and Stanton’s Carmen Subbert were both selected to the all-state team, released by the Iowa Newspaper Association, last Tuesday.

Walker, a junior, was selected for second team in Class 3A, while Subbert, a senior, was selected for second team in Class 1A.

Walker was chosen for second team as a guard. She’s joined in 3A with I-35’s Gracey Griglione, Mediapolis’ Heidi Hillyard, Davis County’s Shelby Graves, MOC-Floyd Valley’s Emily McDonald, Spirit Lake’s Emma Dau, Bondurant-Farrar’s Ashley Burrows and Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Miles Ludwigs.

Shenandoah’s Serena Parker was the only other Hawkeye 10 player to make all-state in Class 3A, as she was chosen for first team.

Subbert meanwhile is joined on the 1A second team list with Fremont-Mills guard Macy Williams, the only other Corner Conference player to be named all-state.

The other second team players include Janesville’s Sylvia Amlie, Belle Plaine’s Kameo Pope, Colo-Nesco’s Shayla Dean, Burlington Notre Dame’s Riley Killbride, Murray’s Kate Patton and New London’s Morgan Christner.

Both Walker and Subbert had career seasons in 2013-14.

Walker finished her junior season second in the conference in points, averaging 19 per game and leading the Hawkeye 10 in assists for the second straight year with 137. 

With Walker leading the attack, Red Oak finished the season 16-8 and was a game away from a second straight state tournament appearance, falling to MOC-Floyd Valley, the eventual state champions, in the regional final.

Her 457 points scored was a career high. Walker now has 948 points in her career, needing 52 more to reach 1,000.

The second team all-state nod for Walker came on the heels of being unanimously selected for first team all-conference by the Hawkeye 10.

Subbert also had a career year this season, posting highs in scoring (502 points), rebounds (193) and steals (72). The senior finished second in the Corner Conference in scoring, averaging 20.1 points per game. She was fourth in the conference in rebounding, averaging 7.7 boards per game.

With Subbert as the key component, Stanton went 23-2, winning the Corner Conference regular season title and getting Stanton to the regional final

Subbert finished her career with 1,330 points, 643 rebounds, 266 assists and 274 steals.

IGCA

Both Walker and Subbert were chosen for all-state by the IGCA.

Walker was chosen for first team all-state in 3A, while Subbert was a second team selection in 2A.

Walker is part of the first team 3A list along with MOC-Floyd Valley’s Alexis Conaway, Mediapolis’ Heidi Hillyard and Andrea Larson, North Polk’s Miranda Murphy, Williamsburg’s Paige Greiner, Unity Christian’s Kassidy De John and Center Point-Urbana’s Arika Wooldridge

Subbert is joined by Patton, Dean, Williams, Rockford’s Madison Wood, Janesville’s Victoria Leyh, Lynnville-Sully’s Cassie Cullen and Cedar Valley Christian’s Shelby Hembera.
