Xplosion program blasts off in time for summer

The Montgomery County Memorial Hospital begins its Xplosion program tomorrow with an orientation at 11 a.m. at the MCMH Fitness Connection Gym.
Xplosion is a weightlifting program for young adults wanting to improve their strength, speed and agility. It is open to all area young adults and is offered free of charge.
According to Kaylee Focht, personal trainer and wellness coach at MCMH, the program utilizes other special areas of MCMH for this program, including Miller Orthopedic, physical and occupational therapy, exercise specialists, personal trainers, an athletic trainer, and dietitians.
The program encompasses positive body image and proper nutrition.
“We emphasize stretching, body awareness, and hip mobility to avoid injury at all cost,” Focht said. “We tie in yoga and pool workouts.”
The program utilizes the registered dieticians at MCMH.
“They come in and talk about proper nutrition for youth,” Focht said. “For instance they talk about proper snacks for tournament play or breakfast to have on game day. This program is designed not just for the athlete, but it is programmed for everyone. If someone wants to have a good grasp on exercise post-high school, that nutrition program will help them, too.”
The program is flexible for those who are battling an injury.
“We have our athletic trainer here for those who are feeling discomfort or battling injury,” Focht added. “We can do the modifications needed for each participant.”
The program duration is 45 minutes per meeting. Strength portion is two days per week for full body strength.
“Usually the strength portion is a half hour, and then we do plyometrics, and we do core at the end,” Focht said. “We do warm-up and cool-down with every workout.
“The third day is a collaboration of everything. We collaborate with the Y and do pool workouts there. Deep stretch outs, yoga, and dieticians are utilized on this day.”
The eight-week program is in its second year. The first four weeks work on one strength program, then the second four weeks will incorporate a new strength program.
“Of course if we need to do any tweaks or replace things, we can do that. We have the resources to do that,” Focht said.
Those resources include Jamie Werges, Ashley Peterson, and Nikki Rengstorf, who combine for more than 25 years of training experience with various ages, abilities and sports enhancement experience; Kelsi Huseman, the MCMH certified athletic trainer with over six years of experience in injury prevention; and Jennifer Bass and Erin McNamara, the MCMH registered dietitians with 15 years experience in nutrition and athletic performance.
“We want to have this so they can use it for their lifestyle,” Focht said.
The gym orientation is available for anyone who is interested in the program. The session times will vary depending on the amount of interest. Last year, the interest was high enough that two sessions were available.  For any questions call Kaylee Focht at 712-623-7000 extension 415, or email at kayfoc@mcmh.org.
