ACCIDENTS
- On May 12, at about 5:20 a.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two-vehicle, property-damage accident at 2nd and Oak Streets in Grant. A black 2005 Hyundai Elantra owned by Jerome Miller, 59, Atlantic, was traveling west on 2nd Street and failed to make the turn onto Oak Street, resulting in the vehicle entering a residential driveway and hitting a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer owned by Connie Giefing, 69, Grant. Damage to Miller’s vehicle is estimated at $4,000, while damage to Giefing’s vehicle is about $1,000. The driver of Miller’s vehicle left the scene of the accident, and it is unknown who had possession and control of the vehicle at the time of the accident. Anyone with information about the driver of the Hyundai is asked to contact Montgomery County Crime Stoppers at 623-5107.
- On May 11, at about 3:37 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office investigated a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 6th Street in Villisca. Elizabeth Goettsch, Villisca, driving a 2001 Ford Taurus, backed from a parking space in the Villisca Foods parking lot across 6th Street, intending to drive east on 6th Street. Steve Williams, Clarinda, driving a 2009 Ford F450 owned by Mediacom, was westbound on 6th Street and stopped for Goettsch as she backed across the street. After Goettsch stopped, Williams continued west and was nearly past Goettsch’s vehicle when it struck the rear of William’s vehicle. Goettsch then apparently pressed the accelerator instead of the brake and ran into a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer owned by Stephanie Gay, Villisca, which was properly parked in the parking lot. After the initial contact, Goettsch continued to the north and forced the Gay vehicle to strike the south wall of the Villisca Foods store. Damage to Goettsch’s vehicle was about $4,500, damage to the Mediacom vehicle was about $1,000, and Gay’s vehicle was considered a total loss with $4,500 estimated damage. The building sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage. The investigation is complete.
