The best ‘fishing spot’ challenge

Last weekend, Dale and I took the kids fishing for the first time. Honestly, I’m not sure who was more excited about it, the kids or us. But, we lacked much of the essential “fishing gear” required so we stopped and stocked up on supplies.

We went to Mile Hill right off U.S. 34 by Glenwood. The sun was warm and our smiles were huge. Dale and I worked quickly to prepare worms on hooks so that the kids could throw in their lines. It was almost humorous, watching the three of them trying to cast and verbally predicting where the “best spot” was. Although, I’ll admit it was probably funniest watching me trying to cast my line. I was very out of practice. I think my first cast kerplunked in front of me about two feet from shore. Yikes. The kids thought it was hilarious. I’m good for comic relief once in a while.

Codie decided to forgo the fishing pole and was trying to catch fish by hand. Logan was getting frustrated because he wasn’t getting any bites. And little Zoe, she walked away with the catch of the day.

We didn’t end up taking anything home to cook. If we had kept what was caught we probably could have made one fish stick, so we threw everything back. But we did have a great time. We were all hot and tired afterwards, but it was worth it.

So now, I have a challenge for my readers. Dale and I want to find out what the best fishing spot is between Red Oak and Glenwood. The little bluegill are fun to catch, but the boys are ready for some catchin’ and cookin’. They want some big fish, at least a fish that meets the weight requirement to keep.

If you like to fish and know a good spot(s), let me know. I want to hear all about it. Then Dale and I will take the kids to the suggested spot(s) and then we’ll decide which one(s) gets the best results and I’ll write about it later in the season.

I have faith in my readers, I know someone out there will be able to point us in the right direction. In my next article about fishing, hopefully it will be a picture of all three of the kids with fish that are almost too huge to hold! The challenge is on.
