Blue Jays get fifth place at Corning

CORNING—The Villisca Blue Jays girls track and field team finished fifth at the Corning Girls Invitational, held at Corning High School Thursday.

Villisca finished with a score of 55 points, out of 14 in the meet.
Morganne Haer provided one of the key highlights by picking up the win in the long jump.

Haer jumped 15’1” to clinch the title by more than one foot over her closest competitors. Haer was also part of the 4x100 and 4x200 teams, that both picked up third place finishes.

Jill Vanderhoof had a couple of top finishes in the field events. In the discus throw, Vanderhoof took second with a throw of 94’7”. The junior also had a fifth place finish in the shot put.

Heather Means finished sixth in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 12:42.74.

Sheri Schaaf had a third place finish in the 100-meter dash, running a time of 13.53 seconds.

On April 16, Villisca won the team title at the Stanton track meet. Villisca won with a team score of 145 points.

Villisca picked up five wins in the individual events.

Means picked up two wins at the Stanton meet, in the 1,500 and 3,000-meter races. Means ran 12:38.34 to win in the 3,000, seven seconds ahead of Essex’s Jasmine Glasgo. Kara Gillespie finished third in the race, running a time of 13:16.33.

Vanderhoof also had two wins, doing so in the discus throw and the shot put. Amanda Focht was second in the discus and third in the shot put.

Schaaf had one of the key highlights for the Blue Jays with a 100-meter dash win. Schaaf ran a time of 13.36 seconds.

The Blue Jays had three wins in the relay events, winning the 4x100, 4x200, sprint and distance medley.

Villisca will compete at Audubon Tuesday, as well as Griswold on Thursday.
