Blue Jays get sweep of Sidney Cowgirls
SIDNEY — The Villisca Blue Jays scored a big conference win Friday night when they defeated the Sidney Cowgirls 10-0 in five innings at Sidney.
Villisca was able to attain the 10-run rule when they scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning. The win was Villisca’s first conference win in the last couple of games.
Their last one came June 13 in an 11-2 win against East Mills. The win against Sidney also completed the regular season sweep of the Cowgirls. Villisca beat Sidney 11-2 June 1 in Villisca.
Jill Vanderhoof led the way for Villisca by going 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a walk, three runs scored, a run batted in and two stolen bases. Vanderhoof was the only Villisca batter in the line-up to have more than one hit in the win against Sidney.
Sheri Schaaf and Morganne Haer each scored two runs at the top of the line-up. Haer also had two stolen bases in the game.
Abbey Wallingford pitched a five-hit shutout for the Blue Jays, striking out five Cowgirls in the process. The win for Wallingford was her seventh this season.
Last Tuesday, Villisca split a triangular against the Fremont-Mills Knights and St. Albert, held in Tabor.
Villisca defeated St. Albert 7-5 and lost to Fremont-Mills 11-1.
After trailing early for much of the game, Villisca rallied to score four runs in the fourth and added a couple more in the fifth and sixth to take the lead from St. Albert.
Casaundra Currin stepped up for the Blue Jays by getting two of their four total hits in the game and scoring two runs. Vanderhoof and Lexi Bronner had the other hits for Villisca.
Against Fremont-Mills, the game ended when the Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

On June 18, Villisca defeated the Bedford Bulldogs, 14-9. For once, Villisca jumped out to an early lead, 3-0, after the first inning. Both teams scored a combined nine runs in the third inning, but Villisca stayed ahead 8-4.
Despite a three run seventh inning by Bedford, the Blue Jays were able to hang on to get the win. Villisca utilized their speed on the base paths as they had 14 steals in the game. Schaaf led the way with four stolen bases, while Haer and Tiffany Gibbons each recorded three. The Blue Jays sit atop the Corner Conference in steals with 96.
Currin had a five RBI day as she was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two doubles.
The Blue Jays look to get the regular season series sweep of Stanton Tuesday night at home, as part of a varsity doubleheader. Villisca scored an 8-6 win at Stanton May 29.
