Estimates in works for Highland Annex repairs

Preliminary estimates are in the works for improvements to the Montgomery County’s Highland Annex. 

Recently, Daric O’Neal of Alley Poyner Maccietto Architects, supervisors Chair Bryant Amos, and maintenance coordinator Dan Wright took a tour of the facility to identify problems. Amos said the board of supervisors will soon be able to examine options. 

“Daric is going to put some preliminary estimates together to do the new heating and cooling system. As far as the roof, we’d have to take the fascade off of it. It’s deteriorating anyway.  Daric suggested we could try another type of roof, like a pitched roof, for example,” Amos said. 

He said the change in the slope of the roof should eliminate water problems there. “Daric said basically what we have up there is a swimming pool, if you plug the drains,” Amos said. 

As for the heating and cooling units, they have drain pipes to take the water condensation off the roof. However, there are still issues to solve with the units themselves. 

“There’s something still leaking off of the units, be it rain water or some sort of condensation not being piped out. Another problem is there’s no way to circulate air. Daric said he was going to work up a cost estimate for replacing some of the windows, as most of the building’s existing windows don’t open,” Amos said. 

Amos said with the estimates, they would be able to determine whether or not the cost of the renovations would total more than $100,000 and require an engineering inspection. Further discussion will take place following the project estimates from O’Neal. 

Wright said the recent mold problems at Highland Annex have been solved. 

“According to the before and after tests from when we did the mold spray, there is no detection of mold, so the product worked very well,” Wright said. 

The supervisors also discussed the possibility of changing the date and times of the regular meeting.  The regular meeting time is now 8:30 a.m, beginning Thursday, April 21. 

In other business, the supervisors:

Approved an agreement for the removal of noxious weeds. 

Renewed a tobacco license for Cubby’s in Red Oak

Dicsussed the possibility of employee and supervisor harassment training for county employees. Further discussion is scheduled for a future Board of Supervisors meeting. 

Approved closing the courthouse at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 27 for A.L.I.C.E. training.   and require an engineering inspection. Further discussion will take place following the project estimates from O’Neal.
