Former Red Oak athletes earn Iowa Conference tennis titles
CEDAR RAPIDS — Former Red Oak High School tennis athlete Megan Anderson finished third in the Flight C portion of the Iowa Conference individual tournament at Coe College in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 16.
The senior, who competes at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, defeated teammate Haley Henrichs to clinch third place. Anderson won the match 8-2.
Ander-son, who was the top seed in Flight C, had advanced all the way to the semifinals when Simpson College’s Lindsay Nash defeated her in three sets.
Anderson took the first game, 6-4, but lost the second set 6-1 before dropping the tiebreaker 1-0.
Anderson and her teammate and fellow Red Oak alum Emily Gutschen-ritter finished in fourth in Flight B doubles. They fell to Simp-son College’s team of Mikayla Struebing and Allison Ander-son, 8-2.
They had advanced as far as the semifinals, but lost to Luther College’s Laura Reutlinger and Kate Patterson, 8-3.
Megan Anderson finished her collegiate career with a 21-22 record. The third place finish at the Iowa Conference individual tournament is her career best.
Gutschenritter, currently a junior, has a 15-18 career record and was the top seed for all matches for Buena Vista this season.
Together, Anderson and Gutschenritter combined to go 12-12 at Buena Vista.
