Friday Football: Class A week 5 preview
Week five is finally here for Class A District 8. Here is a preview of all the games going on in the district Friday night.
East Mills at Logan-Magnolia
No doubt, this will be the game of the night in the district. A win for East Mills over Logan-Magnolia would be huge come playoff time.
The Wolverines are off to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 2011 season.
East Mills has been successful on both sides of the ball. They have the leading rusher in the district in Colby Jennings, who has 614 yards and eight touchdowns this season. Quarterback Logan Currin is tied for second in the district in passing touchdowns with five.
If that’s not enough, Michael Story leads the district in total tackles with 58. The senior also has eight solo tackles for a loss and two sacks this season. With Story and that defense, the Wolverines have given up 20 points in four games.
East Mills plays a Logan-Magnolia team though that is coming off an upset road loss against Riverside. Another district loss would hurt Logan-Magnolia’s chances as repeating as district champions. The loss would also put Logan-Magnolia under .500.
The player to keep an eye on from Logan-Magnolia is Brady Charbonneau, who leads the team in rushing yards (229) and touchdowns (four).
Griswold at Westwood
The Tigers look to bounce back from their close loss against A-H-S-T. They’ll do so against a Westwood team that lost last week to East Mills.
Griswold kept close with A-H-S-T, but they weren’t able to get the second district win.
Their offense is still clicking though as they have a trio of running backs that are second, fourth and seventh in the district in rushing yards. Kenneth Clary leads the group with 594 yards rushing. Clary has 100 carries this season, tied for sixth most in Class A.
Hunter East is the player to watch for Westwood. East leads the team in rushing with 244 yards and five touchdowns. He is also the quarterback as he has 245 yards passing with two touchdowns and four interceptions.
A-H-S-T at West Monona
A-H-S-T is the only other undefeated team in the district. They have a chance to go 3-0 when they head to Onawa to play West Monona.
Kyle Bauerkemper has played a big role for A-H-S-T this season, leading the team in rushing with 434 yards and six touchdowns.
West Monona quarterback Austin Reitz continues to lead the district with 704 passing yards and six touchdowns this season.
Riverside at Underwood
Underwood got back on track last week with a 52-14 win over West Monona. They play a Riverside team that is fresh off a 21-20 win against Logan-Magnolia. The win for Riverside over Logan-Magnolia was the team’s first since 2004.
One of these teams will end the night with 2-1 in the district, while the other drops to 1-2.
Riverside hasn’t defeated Underwood since 2008.
