Friday Football: East Mills, Griswold play key district games
There are some big games taking place in Class A District 8 as we get ready to enter the final few weeks of the 2012 regular season.
The Griswold Tigers go for three in a row Friday night when they face West Monona, while East Mills tries to get back on track when they face Underwood.
Griswold got their wins against A-H-S-T and Westwood. Thanks to tiebreakers, they sit third in the district. The Tigers have won four straight times against West Monona. A win Friday night would put them at 3-1 in the district.
The rushing attack has been key for Griswold this season. Kenneth Clary and Tyler Muhlbauer are third and fifth in the district in rushing yards.
East Mills is coming off a tough loss to Logan-Magnolia last week, who is now the likely favorite to win District 8. The loss was just their second of the season and first in district, but thanks to a couple of tiebreakers, the Wolverines sit on the outside looking in of the playoff hunt.
Underwood sits second in the district, the only other undefeated team. Should East Mills get the win against Underwood, it could set up a scenario where the four teams occupying second thru sixth in district have a 3-1 record (Underwood, East Mills and possibly Griswold and A-H-S-T). This could set up for a very interesting race in District 8, even if the winner might be locked in.
In other District 8 action, Logan-Magnolia will be home to play winless Westwood. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in 11 years. Logan-Magnolia has won both meetings against Westwood.
Paul Hutson continues to lead the Logan-Magnolia offensive attack. His 14 rushing touchdowns are the third most in Class A.
Also, Riverside will be home to face A-H-S-T. The Bulldogs have yet to win a game in district this season. They’ve lost three straight and would like to avoid a fourth straight loss. A-H-S-T is coming off a 49-19 win against West Monona. The Bulldogs have lost five of the last six meetings with A-H-S-T. They last won against A-H-S-T in 2010.
