Friday Football: Homecoming for Stanton

It's another week of football in 8-man District 8. Here is a preview of all the games going around the area Friday night.

Fremont-Mills at Stanton- 7 p.m.

It's Homecoming in Stanton. The Vikings look to snap a three-game losing streak when they host the Fremont-Mills Knights.

Stanton is coming off a loss on the road last week to Boyer Valley. Fremont-Mills meanwhile has won three in a row, including last week at Essex/South Page 55-12.

The Knights are averaging 53 points during their three-game winning streak. They're one of two teams with an undefeated district record.

Stanton will have to contend with Fremont-Mills halfback Spencer Phillips, who is second in the district in rushing yards with 609. Phillips had a big game last week against Essex/South Page, scoring three touchdowns and running for 256 yards.

Alex Becthold and the Stanton defense will do what they can to stop the Knights offense. Becthold leads the team in tackles with 52. Cade Confer, Brady Johnson and Kyle Peterson will also need to do their part, both defensively and on offense.

Southwest Valley at Lenox- 7 p.m.

The strong 2013 season continues for Southwest Valley. They look to win their third straight game. At 3-1 in the district, a win over Lenox would increase the Timberwolves chances of making the playoffs.

Southwest Valley is coming off of a 59-20 win against CAM, which is their biggest win to date.

All four of Southwest Valley's regular season wins have been by 50 points or more. They lead the district in total points scored with 258.

Lenox meanwhile got back on track last week with their 54-28 win against Nishnabotna. A loss for either Southwest Valley or Lenox would hurt their chances at possibly hosting a playoff game.

Southwest Valley has a chance to enter their bye week with a 4-1 district record.

They'll rely on the rushing attack led by Zach Barton, who leads the district with 642 yards. He is co-leader in rushing touchdowns along with Chris Osbourne and Trace Ticknor (all three have nine).

Caleb Lange continues to lead the defensive side for Lenox. He leads the district in total tackles (63), as well as sacks (seven).

Essex/South Page at CAM

ESP remains winless following their loss last week to Fremont-Mills. They take on a CAM team that is coming off a loss to Southwest Valley.

The loss to Southwest Valley undoubtedly hurts their chances at winning the district. To stay in the playoff hunt, CAM will need to win out, starting with ESP Friday night.

Jacob Jones will be the key player for ESP. He leads the team in rushing yards with 236.

Woodbine at Sidney

This is the only non-district game of the week in district 8. Sidney remains undefeated (4-0 overall, 3-0 district). They play a winless Woodbine team.

Woodbine lost their first three games by double-digit points. Last week, they had a chance to defeat Coon Rapids-Bayard, but lost 40-35. It was the most points scored for Woodbine this season as they combined to score nearly 12 points per game in their first three games.

Lucas Hedstrom is the player to watch for Woodbine. He leads the team in rushing with 241 yards and six touchdowns.
