Friday Football: Red Oak to play Shenandoah
SHENANDOAH — The Red Oak Tigers football team squares off with the Shenandoah Mustangs in Shenandoah Friday night.
Both teams are coming off shut-out losses. The Tigers lost to Clarinda last Friday, 35-0, while Shenandoah lost to Underwood, 33-0.
Red Oak picked up their only win last season against Shenandoah, 7-6. The Mustangs missed a go-ahead field goal late in the game.
In the two years prior, Red Oak scored 34 points in their wins over Shenandoah.
One new face this year will be former Red Oak assistant coach P.J. Hedrington, who is now the head football coach for Shenandoah High School. Hedrington was an assistant for Red Oak in wrestling and football.
Red Oak Key Players
Seth Esaias
Esaias led the Tigers in rushing last week against Clarinda with 15 carries for 65 yards. Defensively, Esaias had 18 total tackles in last year's game against Shenandoah.
Tanner Johnson
Johnson grabbed two interceptions and had a pass deflection against Clarinda, last Friday. In last year's meeting, Johnson threw a touchdown pass to Esaias.
Shenandoah Key Players
Kyle Sparks and Parker Rice
Sparks leads the Mustangs in rushing with 72 yards. Rice is second on the team in rushing and is also the quarterback for Shenandoah this season.
Drew Nielsen
Nielsen is Shenandoah's leading tackler with 22 for the season. Nielsen had 14 tackles against Corning in week 0.
Red Oak and Shenandoah will face each other at 7 p.m. There will be more on this game in Wednesday's Red Oak Express.
There are other games taking place Friday night in 3A District 1.
Glenwood travels to Council Bluffs to take on St. Albert. The Rams are coming off a 16-12 home opener loss to Sergeant Bluff Luton. As for St. Albert, they picked up a 19-14 win over Lewis Central, last Friday night.
Atlantic looks to put their 20-14 loss to Denison-Schleswig behind them when they face Kuemper Catholic in Carroll. Kuemper Catholic lost 44-18 last week to Carroll. Both teams are looking to avoid going 0-2.
Harlan is looking to put their week zero loss behind them as they play Abraham Lincoln. The Cyclones lost to Denison-Schleswig on Aug. 19, 43-42, marking the first time in 36 seasons that Harlan lost an opening season game.
Abraham Lincoln is coming off a 28-0 loss to Johnston, last Friday.
Creston will go on the road to take on Norwalk, Friday night. Both teams are coming off week 1 wins. Only one of them will start the season 2-0.
Carroll will hit the road to take on Dallas Center-Grimes. Carroll looks to win their second in a row, while Dallas Center-Grimes tries to avoid going 0-2 to start the season.
Lewis Central will take on Thomas Jefferson in Council Bluffs. Both teams will look to avoid going 0-2.
Finally, Winterset will look to get in the win column when they take on Carlisle. Winterset lost to Norwalk, 7-6 last week. While Carlisle made things unpleasant for Pleasantville, winning 47-6.
