Funderburk wins Best of Show
AMES — Seven students from Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota took top honors in the 31st Art and Design Annual Juried Student Exhibition now on view in Gallery 181 at the Iowa State University College of Design.
The exhibition, which runs through noon on Dec. 2, showcases 62 creative artworks by 50 Iowa State students majoring in art and design, graphic design, integrated studio arts and interior design.
The show was juried by ISU alumni Linda Griffen and Chris Vance. Griffen earned bachelor (1984) and master of arts (1989) degrees in graphic design from Iowa State and is now director of interactive media at Innova Ideas and Services in Ames. She previously was a senior graphic designer at the Principal Financial Group in Des Moines.
Vance received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual studies from Iowa State in 2000. A successful practicing artist, he maintains his own studio in Des Moines.
Award recipients were announced at a public reception at the College of Design on Nov. 10. Recognition was given for Best of Show, second and third place as well as two Juror’s Choice awards and two honorable mentions.
Sophomore Kyle Funderburk, art and design major from Red Oak, won Best of Show for his “Study after Jenny Saville,” a master study in acrylic of English artist Jenny Saville’s oil painting “Rosetta 2.”
“Kyle’s painting had an intensity of emotion that captivated me,” Griffen said. “Every time I surveyed the room, I kept coming back to it.”
“The piece speaks for itself. It has great color and composition,” Vance said.
This year’s Art and Design Annual was coordinated by ISU College of Design faculty members Paul Bruski, graphic design; April Eisman, art and design; Amy Mikovec, interior design; and Teresa Paschke, Chuck Richards and Barb Walton, integrated studio arts.
Gallery 181 is located on the first floor of the College of Design building on the west side of the Iowa State University campus. Admission is free. Exhibition hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery will be closed Nov. 22-26 for Thanksgiving break. The show closes at noon Dec. 2.
