Griswold top Iowa Hall of Pride service winner

 GRISWOLD — For the second straight year, Griswold High School is the recipient of a Hall of Pride Service award. This year though, they’re the top service award winner.

For the Griswold girls basketball team’s efforts, the school will receive $1,000 from the Iowa Hall of Pride. 

The award will go to the school’s student government program.

Griswold received their award for taking part in Caps for Kids.

Fremont-Mills, who was the opponent in this season’s Hall of Pride scrimmage against Griswold, was also a service award winner as they won for Caroling for a Cause.

Griswold and Fremont-Mills took part in the scrimmage Nov. 22 in Griswold.

As part of the event, Griswold raised $3,560 for BrookLynne Peterson, who was diagnosed last summer with Wilms’ Tumor, a pediatric form of kidney cancer.

Peterson also received an autographed hat from Justin Bieber, courtesy of the Caps for Kids group.

Central Clinton, North Polk and Boyer Valley were the other service award winners in the Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge.

Central Clinton’s service project was the DeWitt Referral Center, while North Polk did the Children’s Cancer Connection and Boyer Valley had Shake the Rake.

The other schools received $500 for respective student government groups.

Last year, Griswold was one of the recipients of the $500 prize when they did the “Tigers Txt Responsibly” campaign.

Red Oak also participated in the Hall of Pride Challenge a couple years ago, winning a service award in 2011.
