Griswold Track opens season with Early Birds at Audubon
AUDUBON — The Griswold Boys track and field team kicked off their season with the Early Bird meet in Audubon, last Tuesday, finishing sixth out of 16 teams competing.
Griswold finished with a team score of 51 points, six behind the Big Reds for fifth place. Treynor won the team title with a score of 96.5 points.
Jared Schoning provided the key highlight for the meet by winning the title in the 110-meter hurdles. Schoning ran a time of 16.35 seconds, .10 better than Underwood's Austin Konsor. It was the lone win in the meet for Griswold in both individual and relay events.
Chase Jahnke had a second place finish for Griswold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.69 seconds. Jahnke was less than two seconds behind Riverside's Cade Cleaveland. Jahnke had an eight place finish in the long jump, just behind Mason Anstey.
In other individual results, Caleb Schaaf had a seventh place finish in the 400-meter dash, running a time of 56.92 seconds. Schaaf did finish second in his heat, three-tenths of a second behind Zach Morris of Riverside.
Mason Boucher placed sixth for Griswold in the discus throw with a throw of 111'8”.
Both Schoning and Jahnke were part of relay teams that had top six finishes. Both runners were on the distance medley team that took third, .66 seconds behind Riverside.
Schoning was on the shuttle hurdle relay team, along with Jordan Vetter, Tyler DeWitt, Anstey, Hadley Ogg and Derek Kirchhoff, that finished in second with a time of 1:05.49.
Jahnke was on the 4x400 team that took sixth with a time of 3:51.24.
The girls participated at the Audubon meet last Thursday as they finished seventh.
Griswold finished with a score of 65 points, putting them in the middle of a 15 team field. Audubon held off Treynor to win the team title with a score of 105 points.
The highlight for Griswold was their two medley relay wins. The relay team of Trisha Huerta, Justine Freund, Larissa Backhaus and Rebekah Topham won the distance and sprint medley races.
The same team also had a second place finish in the 4x100 relay. They won the second heat, but were still less than a second behind Audubon.
The 4x400 team, consisting of Freund, Backhaus, Topham and Alyx Flippen, finished second, three seconds behind Tri-Center.
Griswold didn't have any individual winners, but were still able to score points with top finishes.
Huerta finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, a half second behind Justina Royer of Woodbine, with a time of 18.69 seconds.
Allison Young finished sixth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:45.72.
Flippen, as well as Young, were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 3000-meter run. Flippen had a fourth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:16.01.
In the discus throw, Candice Howell took fifth, while Danielle Rosell finished seventh, for the Tigers.
Griswold is back in action Tuesday when they compete at Clarinda High School. Thursday, they'll be a little closer to home as they compete in Red Oak.
