Gusman wins title, Red Oak eighth at Hawkeye 10 meet

Dayton Gusman won his weight class and the Red Oak boys placed eighth as a team at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Tournament Saturday in Glenwood.
Council Bluffs Lewis Central edged Glenwood for the team title, 259.5 to 233. Defending tournament champion Atlantic was third with 198 points.
“I was proud of the performance today,” said Red Oak coach Tiegen Podliska. “We talked about the opportunity to display the growth we’ve made throughout the season by flipping some results from the regular season.”
Gusman was dominant at times for Red Oak while winning the 150-pound weight class. The junior won by fall and major decision in his first two matches to face Council Bluffs St. Albert’s Sam Raymond in the final. Gusman battled with Raymond into the final period before he scored seven points in a 11-6 decision for his first conference championship. And, as it turns out, the last for the Tigers as they move on to the Western Iowa Conference beginning next season.
“Dayton was on a mission, he was tactical in all of his matches,” Podliska said. “The first couple guys tried to hang around and keep it close but he got to his positions and scored some points. He was seeded second to a returning state qualifier and wrestled through every position in his final match to earn his first conference title and our school’s last as members of the Hawkeye 10.”
Izic Zarate (113 pounds) added a second-place finish and Oliver Dykes (285) was fourth. Zarate lost in his finals to Glenwood’s Quinn Lane by fall. Dykes went 2-2 on the day.
Jackson Rea (120), Jacob Woodend (126), Carson VanScoy (132), Ryan Archuleta (165) and Jackson Perdue (175) all placed sixth.
“Izic looked great in his first couple matches and knows what he needs to work on from his finals match,” Podliska said. “Jacob (Woodend) and Carson (VanScoy) both picked up solid wins to advance to some higher placing matches.”
“Jackson was gritty in his first couple matches, he’s getting better in every position. Oliver showed a lot of growth even though he had a couple losses, he was 0-2 at this tournament last year and was right in the 3rd place match. We’ll take a couple weeks off from competition before we head to the district tournament.”
Red Oak will return to Glenwood on Feb. 14 for the Class 2A District Meet. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.
