Red Oak boys 14th at Rollin Dyer tournament

The Red Oak boys finished in 14th place with 37 team points at the Rollin Dyer Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic Saturday.
Grand Island, Neb. was the team champion with 242 points followed by the host Trojans with 212 points.
Red Oak coach Tiegen Podliska said his team wrestled a little short-handed in Atlantic.
“We kept a couple of our younger guys out as this is a very difficult tournament and we thought it was better for them to watch and be great teammates,” the coach said. “We had a couple in match injuries where we erred on the side of caution and kept them out to make sure they’re healthy for the more important parts of the season coming up.
“Before the tournament we talked about the opportunities of beating someone when the seed or ranking or prediction says you aren’t supposed to.”
Tigers’ heavyweight Oliver Dykes led the way with a fifth-place finish in Atlantic. The 285-pounder finished 4-2 with four falls.
“Oliver placed above his seed getting to his positions in most matches, he only struggled when he let his opponents dictate the action,” Podliska said.
Izic Zarate (113 pounds) finished 3-3 on the day with two falls and a technical fall to place sixth and Jacob Woodend (126) finished 1-3 with a win by medical forfeit to place eighth.
“Izic took it personally and finished sixth after being drawn into the bracket as he wasn’t a top eight seed,” Podliska said. “He learned on the go focusing on some different techniques we’ve been working on in practice. He was a couple small things from placing even higher.”
