Sholes tops 1,000 career points in Trojans’ win

Isaiah Sholes scored 25 points to surpass 1,000 career points and help Essex to a 52-40 victory over Griswold in Corner Conference basketball Friday.
The Trojans (7-11 overall, 3-8 in the conference) led 27-21 at the half and extended that lead with a 12-5 second quarter run in the win.
Sholes came up big all night for the Trojans. The 6-foot-4 senior grabbed 18 rebounds, four assists and three steals to go with his game-high 25.
“We played as a team and everybody who got minutes scored,” said Essex coach Ray Baker. “We got into some foul trouble early but our three sophomores stepped up big and played some valuable minutes for us. Isaiah’s 1,000 (points) gave us the finishing momentum that we needed to close the game away. Our seniors led the way the most of the night for us.”
Sholes entered the game 20 points short of 1,000 and currently sits at 1,005 points and is among the top seven scorers in school history.
Will Roberts and Damien Aradanas added nine points each and Aradanas pulled down 13 rebounds of his own.
Brayden Lockwood scored 16 to lead Griswold (1-15 overall, 0-10 in the conference).
Bedford 68,
Essex 13
Bedford held Essex scoreless in the first half in a 68-13 win over the Trojans in Corner Conference boys basketball last Tuesday.
“We couldn’t find a bucket in the first half mixed with too many turnovers,” said Essex coach Ray Baker.
The Trojans shot 17.2 percent – 5-of-29 – and turned the ball over 40 times aganst the Bulldogs’ defense.
Hayden Riedel put in 23 points and Quentin Dalton 15 to lead Bedford.
Essex was led by Isaiah Sholes’ 10 points and six rebounds.
Hamburg 55,
Griswold 54
A monster game from Gabe Staley lifted Hamburg to a 55-54 win over Griswold in Corner Conference boys basketball last Tuesday.
Gabe Staley hit on 18-of-24 shots to score a career-high 40 points while grabbing 21 rebounds in the win.
Griswold was led by Brayden Lockwood’s 28 point and eight rebound night. Dain Laverty added 12 points and six rebounds.
Essex can’t hold on in loss to Griswold
Essex got off to a 15-5 start but couldn’t hold Griswold off over the final three quarters in a 45-29 loss Friday in Corner Conference girls basketball.
Griswold erased the 10-point first quarter deficit with a 19-2 second quarter run. Over the final three quarters, the Tigers (9-8 overall, 4-6 in the conference) outscored the Trojanettes (4-15 overall, 2-9 in the conference) 40-14.
Amanda Houser scored 19 points and Sadie Gohlinghorst 13 to lead Griswold.
Mariska Kirchert scored nine points and had 12 rebounds for Essex. Kylie Valdez added seven and six rebounds.
Griswold 54,
Lenox 46
Griswold had four players score in double figures and the Tigers won their third straight game in a 54-46 win over Lenox in nonconference girls basketball Thursday.
The Tigers (8-8 overall, 3-6 in the Corner Conference) trailed 26-23 at the half but they outscored the Tigers 18-9 in the third quarter to take the lead back for good.
Brystol Wyman led the way with 14 points, Amanda Houser added 13, Sadie Gohlinghorst 13 and Carsyn Adams 12.
Delaney Funk scored 16 points and Reese Reed 15 to lead Lenox.
Bedford 61,
Essex 13
Four players scored in double-figures for Bedford in a 61-13 win over Essex in Corner Conference girls basketball last Tuesday.
Caroline Simmons led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Delani Dalton added 12 and Aniya Hardee and Kalynn Moore added 10 points each.
Griswold 44,
Hamburg 8
Griswold controlled from start to finish in a 44-9 win over Griswold in Corner Conference girls basketball last Tuesday.
Carsyn Adams led the Tigers with 20 points. Amanda Houser chipped in nine points.
Emmy Matheson’s five points paced Hamburg.
