Martensdale St. Marys improved to 7-2 on the season with a 54-42 in over Southwest Valley in Pride of Iowa Conference girls basketball in Corning Friday.
The Timberwolves (1-7 overall, 1-4 in the conference) put up a good fight in the second half after the Blue Devils (7-2 overall, 5-1 in the conference) raced out to a 28-14 halftime lead. In the second half, the Timberwolves outscored the visitors 28-26 but could not overcome the halftime deficit.
“Martensdale St. Marys is a very solid ball club with many players with state tournament experience,” said Southwest Valley coach Mike Cormack. “They have good shooting and great quickness. We were able to make adjustments at halftime and outscore them in the second half. We just couldn’t make our shots in the first half against a very good defensive team.
“Everyone who played did something positive for us and we played a solid game against the second-place team in the league.”
Mackenzie Fast hit five three pointers while scoring 19 points to lead the Timberwolves in scoring. Hailey Randall had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds and Carly Graney led the Blue Devils with 24 points.
