Letters to the editor: Games being played

 To the Editor:

In recent years, the American people have been forced to deal with the poor job performance of Congress; namely, the Republican majority’s game of obstructing any progressive action on important issues. (Even the pot holes remain and are more expensive to fix).  

As this diverse, misfit group of Republican members disrupts the governmental processes, they also display a lack of party unity and a lack of intelligent alternatives for the problems. Apparently, the game of obstruction is all they can muster, and it shows. 

To add insult to injury, the Republican party now presents Donald Trump as their leading candidate in the 2016 presidential election. Voters may think it is a bad joke. Few people know the real Donald Trump. Some say he is a fraud and I tend to agree with them. The crowds who attend Trump’s rallies may be there for his games and not for the content of his message. 

It is hard to believe 16 other Republican candidates avoided responding to Trump’s insults as they caved in one by one. Former Gov. Jeb Bush did insist, “This guy needs therapy.” Gov. John Kasich did hold steady during the debates as he laughingly proclaimed, “This is just crazy.” One could have called Trump, “Dumb Donald;” however, nobody went after Trump’s ego. 

Obviously, Americans are in for a roller coaster ride. I remember the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Pres. Johnson did not run again and Hubert Humphrey was the candidate. Hundreds of people who were protesting the Viet Nam war came to Chicago and they clashed with the city police, whom Mayor Richard Daly called out, telling them to shoot if they had to. We lived in a near-by city and decided to watch it on television.
